Vacaresti Nature Reserve, Bucharest

Planned as a flood reservoir in the 80’s for the River Dâmbovița but never finished, the last 27 years saw Vacaresti Lake come to life as nature took over the concrete structures. The natural springs that are feeding the lake have created a unique ecosystem, now home to more than 100 species of wild birds and animals. Now a protected natural park, the looming luxury residential developments and communist blocks of flats are the only reminders that this unique nature reserve is located in the centre of Romania’s capital.
